US SUPREME COURT RULES FEDERAL LAW PROHIBITS HOMOSEXUAL AND TRANSGENDER DISCRIMINATION

On June 15, 2020, the US Supreme Court issued a decision extending anti-discrimination protection in employment to homosexual and transgender employees and applicants for employment. In Bostock v. Clayton County, Georgia the Court held that an employer who fires an individual merely for being homosexual or transgender violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Puerto Rico’s Emergency Paid Leave

On April 9, 2020, the Governor of Puerto Rico, Hon. Wanda Vazquez, signed into law Act No. 37-2020, to amend Article 6 of Act No. 180-1998 to provide that, in cases where the Governor or the Secretary of Health declares a state of emergency, any employee suffering or suspected of suffering from the illness that motivated the state of emergency and who has exhausted all leaves which he/she has a right to, will be entitled to a special emergency paid leave.
